Can I move my website to different folder without breaking it?

Some web designs will work for any folder and for any domain name. These sites likely use relative paths for links and content, and they likely do NOT need Apache rewrite rules. Typically, these are hand-made sites.

Other web designs will break the moment you change the domain name or root folder. These sites may use absolute paths for links and content, or they may require Apache rewrite rules. Typically, these are sites built with a program or Content Management System.

Here are some CMS whose sites cannot be easily moved without needing to adjust and reconfigure the source code and/or database.

  • WordPress
  • Joomla
  • Drupal
  • Basically any CMS which has an installation process and database configuration.
